Mobile Operators: How to Keep Up with Customer Demand

By | September 28th, 2017|Blog, Technology|0 Comments

By Jeff Melton, Andrew Rodd and John Reister Mobile network operators are struggling to keep up with the growing demands of their customers. People are live-streaming videos, playing multiplayer games and engaging in other activities that can overwhelm the network, making all services slow and unreliable. This is an untenable situation. Operators that fail to deliver a consistently superior customer-received usage experience (CRUX) are vulnerable to negative customer reviews and increased churn. Mobile operators are not just fighting for customers; they’re fighting for their futures. They’re struggling to generate sufficient cash flow to make the necessary capacity investments that will provide customers with the level of service they demand. And when they’re unable to make these desperately needed improvements, they often cut their rates to [...]

Finding Europe’s Edge in the Internet of Things

By | April 17th, 2017|Internet of Things, Technology|0 Comments

Technology providers in the US seem to have captured a great deal of mindshare around the promise and possibilities of the Internet of Things. European technology providers, however, are no less enthusiastic about the IoT’s potential, even if they have been less assertive in promoting their vision to a global audience. In fact, research by Bain & Company finds that in many cases, executives in Europe are more ambitious and optimistic about their plans to deploy and integrate IoT solutions than their American peers, particularly in industrial and commercial applications. Interestingly, we also identified significant differences in the ways that executives in the two regions view the opportunities. These differences could deliver significant competitive advantages to European firms—if they recognize them and act swiftly to [...]

An Autonomous Car Roadmap for Suppliers

By | April 12th, 2017|Technology|0 Comments

Autonomous vehicles, with their promising pilot programs and enormous potential, make headlines in business and technology news every day. Self-driving cars and trucks promise to dramatically change the economics of nearly every industry, and it seems likely that eventually many people will no longer feel the need to own a car or even know how to drive. However, the path to this driverless future is more complex than a first glance might suggest. Fully autonomous cars are likely to remain a small-volume market for some time. In the interim, assistive technologies will play a much larger role in the industry, as drivers come to rely on technology that guides them and supports their driving decisions. Mastering these new technologies will be essential for automakers and [...]

Close to the Core: Telcos’ Competitive Advantage in the Internet of Things

By | February 24th, 2017|Technology|0 Comments

When telecom executives look for opportunities in the Internet of Things (IoT), they frequently look up. Up the stack, that is. That’s where commercial customers will look for solutions that enable them to manage billions of connected devices and generate value with the data that flows from those devices. Telecom executives see this enormous opportunity and wonder how they can capture value by developing industry-specific offers for their customers. Read the brief on Bain.com

The Changing Faces of the Cloud

By | January 25th, 2017|Technology|0 Comments

Cloud computing has taken the technology industry by storm. Bain estimates that revenues for public and private cloud hardware, software and services amount to $180 billion, or 16% of the $1.1 trillion enterprise IT industry. From 2012 to 2015, cloud demand accounted for 70% of related IT market growth, and we expect it to represent 60% of growth through 2020 (see Figure 1). Technology providers that fail to compete and win in tomorrow’s cloud computing market risk missing out on this important source of future growth. In 2011, when we wrote “The Five Faces of the Cloud,” our first Bain Brief on this topic, few would have predicted how quickly this market would evolve. Most cloud demand was from start-ups and small and mid-size businesses. [...]
